THE DICTIONARY: LET'S USE IT!!!
A CALL FOR DICTIONARY USE:
Learning how to write and learning how to read, calls for knowing how to use the dictionary as well. Ever so grateful we are of 'spell-check' on the internet and the many sites we can look up definitions. However, knowing how and when to use the dictionary is very resourceful. It is also a sign of intelligence (knowing what a dictionary is and how to use it). A sign of professionalism (knowing when and why to use the dictionary).
The Best Word To Choose:
Are you writing an essay, a book report or studying for your final exams? What about that proverbial and all encompassing 'thesis,' (editor anyone???). Practicing for that important interview? Have you been chosen to give the presentation at the business meeting? Most dictionaries present many options within the same text as your chosen word (as well as a brief definition). This makes your word choice easier and gives your project or assignment a more precise meaning (proper word function).
BORING--Or An Adventure:
Using the dictionary can be fun and adventurous. Some visits will be made to: nouns/pronouns, adjectives/conjunctions and verbs/adverbs. You'll also learn syllables/pronunciation, content/context as well as verb tenses and structured sentences. And MUCH MORE!!!
Guide Your Children To Dictionary Usage: Guide your children to become familiar with the dictionary:
*Put the dictionary in a place it can be easily seen: (coffee table, computer stand, dresser, etc.). Many people have gotten creative and are keeping a dictionary in just about every room of the house. When children ask questions, you'll quickly be able to demonstrate its usage and it will also encourage them to look the word up for themselves.
*Choose a dictionary with an interesting cover: One that is colorful, has images of planes/trains, make-up/fashion or flowers/other nature scenes, etc. An interesting cover will cause your child to pick it up.
*Be an example: Let your children see you use the dictionary and they will (more than likely) do the same.
