WORKERS AND STUDENTS:

Medical Assistant workers and students alike, should be aware that employers are responsible for having personal protection equipment available for use at all times in the workplace. There should also be an 'exposed control plan.' This plan is a list of precautions to follow to reduce ones risk of exposure to hazards. Following the plan shows that you are dedicated to your field of work, to yourself and to your patient. It shows that you are willing to follow the rules to protect yourself (so you may safely and legally work); and your patient, (to give no ground for increased risk of infections on top of what the patient may already be dealing with).

STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: It is important for students to wear their assigned PPE in the classroom while you are learning. This helps to get you in practice and the unwaivering mindset to wear your protective equipment when necessary. There are dangers in the classroom just as there are on the job. The school, just like the workplace, should be in compliance with OSHA Standards for 'The Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in the Laboratory' and 'The Bloodborne Pathogen Standard.'

PURPOSE OF PPE:

The purpose of personal protective equipment (PPE), is to guard against physical contact with blood, body fluids and tissues and ofter infectious substances and materials. They protect against accidental splashes and spills which may contain deadly pathogens. The workplace should also contain 'spillkits' (effectively cleans up hazardous wastes) as well.

PPE consists of the following:

*Cap: To cover the head

*Gown: Made of plastic or other nonabsorbent material

*Face/Eye Mask(s) or Goggles: May come individually or in combined form to shield both eyes and face.

*Gloves: Usually latex, but employer should have an alternative for those allergic to powdered and/or latex gloves.

*Shoe Covers: To protect ones shoes/feet from pathogens.

ATTEND IN-HOUSE WORKSHOPS/MEETINGS:

Stay current with any new and upcoming changes in standards, practices and procedures. This can be done within the workplace as well as while you are attending school for your training.  As always, the medical field is always advancing in strategies and technologies. Your participation shows that you are a responsible worker.

Excellent advice and I know the standards are so important. I know of people who developed serious health problems working in the hospital before there were these excellent standards. Rated up!
